Noel Hazard was born in the remote mining community of Mount Isa in Queensland, Australia, where he took up the sport of boxing at a young age. Hazard soon showed his talent and became the Queensland and Australian champion in the featherweight division. His performances earned him a place on the Australian Olympic team for the 1956 Melbourne Games where he lost to the eventual silver medallist Tommy Nicholls. He then turned professional, winning on his début in Sydney in 1959. Hazard then embarked on a tour of the United Kingdom, winning his next three fights, before suffering his first professional loss in early 1960. By 1962 he had returned to Australia where he won his final bout before retiring in May of that year.
After his boxing career Hazard lived in Sydney where he worked as an electrician before moving into politics. He campaigned against racism in the mid-1960s and helped to establish the first Aboriginal Tent Embassy in the early 1970s. He was also a longtime photographer for the Tribune newspaper.
