Biography

Mary Anne Marchino was the daughter of Elmer Marchino, who was a big supporter and administrator of swimming both in Indianapolis and at the national level. Mary Anne swam for the Indianapolis Athletic Club and Indiana University, but later represented Riviera Country Club. She placed second seven times in AAU backstroke events, unable to defeat the era’s world best backstroker, Carin Cone. A graduate of Purdue University, Marchino later taught kindergarten, owned a craft business, and raised a family of five children with her husband, Gene Witchger.
