Biography

Miriam Smith was born in New Jersey but grew up in Tacoma, Washington. She made the 1976 Olympic team just after her high school graduation, by placing third at the US Olympic Trials in the 200 metre backstroke. Smith swam for Southern Cal, graduating in 1980. She also competed with the US national team in 1977 at an invitational meeting in Leningrad. She was a finalist at US Nationals in both backstroke events from 1974-77. Smith was inducted into the Pacific Northwest Swimming Hall of Fame in 2005.
