During the 1980s Zhang Yousheng represented the Chinese national volleyball team in multiple international competitions. A veteran of the sport Zhang competed at the World Championships, the Asian Games, and the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. In addition to playing the sport he also served as the coach of the Jiangsu team. His daughter Zhang Changning has also played for the national volleyball team and won gold at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.
