Biography

Erasmo Salemme was an Italian volleyball player. He began to play in the 1964-65 season with VVF Brunetti Roma and then moved to VV.F. Ruini Firenze where, under coach Aldo Bellagambi, he won three Italian titles (1968, 1971, 1973). In 1973, at the end of the golden age of Ruini, he moved to the team of Ariccia alongside Mattioli, Di Coste and the American Kirk Kilgour. He won titles in 1975 and 1977 with the club, now known as Federlazio Roma. He finished his active career with Loreto (1979-81) and Trasimeno Volley (1981-83).

Salemme débuted with the national team in Oporto on 5 April 1965 in a losing match against France (3-0), winning a gold medal at the 1970 Torino Summer Universiade and a silver at the 1975 Mediterranean Games behind Yugoslavia. He finished 8th at the 1976 Summer Olympics, where Italy took part in volleyball at the Games for the first time. In total he won 231 international caps.

Salemme turned to coaching after his active career and coached, among others, Trasimeno Volley (1983), Sestese Pallavolo (1985-88), Prato (1994) and teams in the Firenze area. His son Giuliano was also a volleyball player and, in the 2000s, he began to coach as well.
