Biography

Emiko Miyamoto was a member of the female Japanese volleyball team that won the gold medal at the 1964 home Olympics in Tokyo. She also won two medals at World Championships, winning silver at Brazil in 1960 and gold in the Soviet Union in 1962, when she also won the MVP award and was described as the “world’s best attacker”.

Domestically, Miyamoto played with Nichibo Kaizuka. In March 1965, after she retired from playing, she married a former Tokyo Olympic basketball training coach. They lived in Hitachi City, Ibaraki Prefecture for many years, giving lectures and volleyball coaching. Miyamoto died from sepsis in Takahagi, in December 2023, at the age of 86.
