Biography

Born in ‘s-Gravenzande in South Holland, Bill Vanderpol moved to Canada where he worked for the Canadian steel mill Stelco in Hamilton for more than 50 years. Vanderpol was also a talented swimmer and competed in water polo matches as a goalkeeper.

In the 1950s Vanderpol was an Ontario swimming champion in breaststroke before taking up water polo at the Hamilton Aquatic Club. From 1957 to 1972 he won multiple national titles for the club in junior and senior categories.

Vanderpol was part of the Canadian teams that competed at the 1967 Pan American Games and the 1972 München Olympics. After the Olympics Vanderpol served as an international referee in the sport including officiating at three World Championships (1975, 1978, 1982).
