Biography

Tristan Sauer grew up in the Lausanne area, where he took up competitive swimming in his youth alongside his brother Gérard. He won the 1941 national title in the 100 metres freestyle while swimming for a club in Bern. He returned to Lausanne in 1942 but moved to Genève by 1944 where he swam with the local club. He was also member of the water polo team there, and was first selected for the Swiss national team in 1947, and was once again selected in early 1948 alongside Gérard. Sauer was named once again later that year to the national team, this time to represent his country at the Olympic Games in London. The Swiss team did not advance past the first round, only mustering two goals in their two defeats against Spain and Sweden.

Sauer continued to play water polo at the club level with CN Lausanne and Bern Water Polo Club until the late 1950s, and also played in international matches as late as 1957. He coached the Red Fish Neuchâtel in the 1960s, and continued to play recreational water polo matches into his 60s. He died in Bern at the age of 87.
