Biography

Islington’s Alfred Griffin competed for both London and the Home Counties in representative matches. He won the British lightweight title in 1936 and was duly selected for that year’s Olympics. Although he did not win a medal in Berlin, he did set a new British record for the press at 87.5kg. Six weeks later at Birmingham he increased the record by 1.8 kg. Griffin retained his British title in 1937.
