Biography

Bálint Nagy began his sports career in 1932 at the BSzKRt. He first competed as a wrestler, but the association’s weightlifters noticed that his arms were short, which was very advantageous for weightlifting. He tried lifting and loved this sport so much that he left wrestling. After World War II he competed as an athlete for Bp. Előre, then Törekvés, and won nine national championships in a row between 1948 and 1956, all in the 60-kilogram category.

At the 1948 London Olympics, at the age of 29, Nagy earned his first opportunity to compete in international event, finishing 15th in the featherweight category. Four years later at the 1952 Helsinki Games he finished seventh overall. Nagy proved to be the third-best European behind two Soviets, gold medallist Rapael Chimishk’iani (337.5 kg) and silver medallist Nikolay Saksonov (332.5 kg).

During and after his sports career B. Nagy worked as a bus driver. When he finished his active sports career, he remained close to the sport as a coach.
