Biography

Iranian middleweight weightlifter Mehdi Attar Ashrafi won medals at his home edition of the Asian Games and at the Asian Weightlifting Championships. The weightlifting events at the 1974 Asian Games had the unusual distinction of medals being awarded for the clean & jerk, the snatch, and the total. Attar Ashrafi won three medals in Tehran, with bronze in both the snatch and the overall total, and a silver in the clean & jerk element. Two years later he competed at the 1976 Montréal Olympics where he finished in 13th place. Attar Ashrafi’s career ended on a high with a silver medal at the 1979 Asian Weightlifting Championships in Tokyo.
