Over the next few years Helgason won multiple medals at both the Reykjavik and National Championships, eventually earning himself a place on the Olympic team. At the 1980 Moskva Games he lifted a total of 295.0 kg in the middle-heavyweight event to finish 13th. By 1983 he had moved to the United States to study, where he also continued to compete.

Upon his return to Iceland Helgason had further success at the Reykjavik and National Championships, winning more medals.
