Biography

Italian weightlifter Peppino Tanti took part at two Olympic Games, in München and Montréal where, at the age of 35, he was the only Italian weightlifter. Born in, and a native of, Sardinia, he started lifting in 1962 in the club in his town and was coached by Edgardo Ricciardi. He débuted on the national team in 1966 and in his career earned over 30 international caps. His most prestigious victories were the two gold medals at the Mediterranean Games in 1967 and 1971, as well as a third place at the 1970 World Championships in the featherweight class. Tanti won nine Italian titles, also setting six national records. In the early 2000s Tanti became president of Polisportiva Sassarese, the club where he spent his entire career.
