Biography

Between 1942 and 1950 Antal Bánkuti was a basketball player for Postás and a handball player for KAOE. With the latter team he won the Hungarian handball championship in 1944 and 1946, and played for the Hungarian national team seven times.

In basketball Bánkuti won the Hungarian championship in 1947, and between 1946 and 1948 he played for the Hungarian national team 31 times. The basketball national team was one of the first Hungarian sports delegations to travel abroad after World War II with him being a member of the team at the 1946 European Championship in Geneva winning a bronze medal. In 1948 he won the Balkan Championship in Sofia and participated in the London Olympics. At the Olympic tournament the Hungarian team defeated Italy, Canada, and host nation Great Britain, but lost in overtime to Uruguay and group winners Brazil, thus failing to advance to the top eight. The Hungarian leadership did not allow the team to play for the 9th–16th places, so due to the lack of matches, the team was automatically ranked 16th. At the Games Bánkuti played in all five matches and scored 21 points. In the early 1950s he left Hungary and settled in Canada.
