William Davies began competing in the sport of amateur wrestling when he was 15-years-old at a local after school club in Victoria, Australia. When Davies was 21 he joined the Royal Australian Navy and remained with the Navy for the rest of his working life. Whilst in the Navy he was selected to represent Australia in freestyle wrestling at his home Olympics in Melbourne in 1956. Competing in the middleweight class, Davies was eliminated in the third round of the competition by the eventual gold medallist Dan Hodge (USA).
