Biography

Leon Pottier was a multi-sport athlete in his hometown of Spa, in the Wallonie region. Active in football and athletics in his younger years, he competed at two Olympic Games in two different disciplines, first in the shot put at the 1920 Games in Antwerpen where did not qualify for the final round. Also an active wrestler, Pottier won a national championship title in the heavyweight class in 1924 and was selected to travel to Paris and compete in the 1924 Olympics, where he finished in fifth place of the heavyweight Greco-Roman tournament after losing in the fourth round to Emil Larsen of Denmark. He continued to be active as a wrestler for many years after his Olympic appearance, into the 1930s. Pottier died relatively young at the age of 50 in 1941, apparently connected to lingering after effects of torture during World War II that he suffered at the Spa Barracks.
