Biography

Greco-Roman wrestler Hartmut Reich first appeared at the 1973 East German nationals, winning the title as a flyweight. He won his first international medal with a bronze at the 1976 Worlds, repeating that bronze in 1977 and also won the European title. In 1978, he earned silver at the Worlds, adding a 1979 bronze, and was also runner-up at the 1979 Europeans. In 1981 he won the European title again and was silver medalist at the Worlds, and in 1982 he crowned his career with a World Championship.

Reich was highly considered for the 1976 Montréal Olympics but tore his meniscus. At the 1980 Moskva Olympics he finished a disappointing eighth. He missed the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics due to the Soviet-led boycott. Domestically, he won five national titles between 1976 and 1988.

Reich studied sports at the DHfK Leipzig (Deutsche Hochschule für Körperkultur) and became a graduated wrestling coach at his home club SC Motor Jena. After re-unification he was employed by the German Wrestling Association as a Regional Coach at Jena.
