West German Greco-Roman wrestler Markus Scherer won the silver medal at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics in the light-flyweight class. Four years later at Seoul he finished sixth. He was World Championship runner-up in 1983, and European Champion in 1989.
Domestically, Markus Scherer won the German national title in 1983-87, 1989-91, and 1993-94. He worked for the city administration of Schifferstadt for several years. After qualifying on a second educational path, he completed a degree as a sports teacher. He later became the trainer and manager of the Schifferstadt Olympic Regional Center. His brothers Freddy, Bernd and Markus also became internationally successful wrestlers, but never Olympians.
