Mihály Matuta started his career as a wrestler with MTE in 1917. He won his first national title in 1924, when he also finished fifth at the Paris Olympics. He won a bronze medal at both the 1925 and 1926 European Championships and in 1927 and 1928 won further Hungarian titles. Matura combined his active career with that of coach until he retired from competition in 1935. After World War II, Matuta became head coach of Csepel SC, and he later held the post of president of the Hungarian Wrestling Association. He was a member of the Board of the International Wrestling Association in 1952, and was elected vice-president in 1972. He was also a member of the Hungarian Olympic Committee. As a trainer and sports manager, Matura participated in almost all world wrestling events.
