Gyula Zombori started his sports career as a wrestler with the MTK club and later moved to their Budapest rivals MAC. He competed in both in freestyle and Greco-Roman style. In 1931 he won the Hungarian championship title in the middle weight in freestyle. Zombori won a silver medal at the European Championships in 1930 in Greco-Roman and the following year in the free style. In 1932, he participated in the Los Angeles Olympics, where he competed again across both styles but only won one of his five bouts. After the Olympics, he left the national team and moved to a new club, Elektromos. As he was not able to qualify for the 1936 Olympics finished his active sports career and worked as a coach and captain of the Levente national team. In 1946, he died under unclear circumstances as a result of an accident in Germany.
