Biography

The oldest of four wrestling brothers, Oddvar Barlie won his first national title in 1952, and finished with five titles, also winning in 1956, 1959-60 and 1964. Barlie was selected for the 1960 Roma Olympics along with his younger brother Harald, competing as a middleweight in Greco-Roman. Other members of the Barlie wrestling dynasty were Kåre (né 1933) with three national titles, and Åge (1945-67), also with three national titles. The female part of the dynasty included Åge’s daughter Ine Barlie (né 1965), the 1987 and 1992 World Champion; Oddvar’s granddaughter Lene Barlie (né 1973), 1993 World Championship bronze medalist; and his grandniece Mette Barlie (né 1965), the 1995 World Championship silver medalist. Oddvar Barlie worked for the municipality in Oslo, responsible for maintenance of the streets in the Nordstrand area of the Norwegian capital.
