Biography

Gustav Bauer won one match at the 1904 Olympics and then lost the gold medal by a decision to George Mehnert. Mehnert and Bauer knew each other’s moves quite well because they were both members of Newark’s National Turnverein and were regular practice partners. Though Mehnert had the better of it at the Olympics, Bauer’s record in national competition was quite impressive. Between 1905 and 1912 he won six AAU titles at either 115 or 125 lbs., and he was a three-time runner-up at the AAU, twice in the 105 lb. class.
