While competing for Iowa State, Glen Brand won the 1948 NCAA title at 177 lbs. and then won the Olympic Trials. He was not a top pick to win a gold medal at that time, but after the trials he wrestled head-to-head with alternate Joe Scarpello, and the intense daily competition helped him so much that he won the gold medal in London. Brand was also a runner-up at the NCAAs in 1947. He was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1978 and into the Iowa Sports Hall of Fame in 1957.
