Biography

Representing Oregon State and the Multnomah AC, Chet Newton never won a national title. He was an arch-rival of Robin Reed, who took the 1924 featherweight gold medal away from Newton. At Oregon State, Reed coached Newton for a bit, but his intense dislike of Newton caused him to concoct a scheme whereby Oregon State woule share their wrestlers with other schools. In effect, Reed tried to trade Newton to another school and it led to Reed’s dismissal as coach. Newton died in a car accident when his car hit a concrete underpass and burst into flames.
