Biography

John Bertrand sailed for the St. Francis Yacht Club. He was on the 1980 US Olympic team that did not compete and won a silver in Finn class at the 1984 Olympics. Bertrand studied business at the College of Marin in Marin County, California. He was 1976-77 World Champion in the Laser, and won the 1978 Finn World Championship.

Bertrand worked as a salesman for Ulmer-Kolius Sales. He is not related to the other Olympic sailor John Bertrand, who competed for Australia and is best known for leading Australia II to the 1983 America’s Cup title, breaking the United States supremacy in that event after 132 years.
