Biography

Dutch sailor Boudewijn Binkhorst was active in the sport for the best part of two decades, competing in both the Finn and Star classes. Binkhorst participated in the Finn class at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics where he finished 19th, which included a sixth-place finish in the fourth of the seven races. Whilst studying medicine at the Groningen University he continued to compete in international competitions, becoming the European champion in the Finn in 1971 and winning silver in 1975 at the World Finn Championships.

Binkhorst competed at his second Olympic Games in Moskva in 1980 with compatriot Kobus Vandenberg in the Star class, where the pair finished sixth. In 1981 he came up with a new boat design for the Star that enabled the craft to be self-drained. His new design, however, was originally banned by the sailing authorities, despite the boat gaining initial approval. Eventually Binkhorst was able to use his new design with him competing at 1984 Los Angeles Olympics with Willem van Walt Meijer. The Dutch duo finished eighth overall, which included winning the fourth race of the competition.
