Biography

Hans Baars-Lindner was born as Hans Baars in 1925. After the death of his father, he was adopted by his uncle Hans Lindner, from whom he also learned to sail. Before World War II Baars-Lindner began an apprenticeship as a boat builder. After the war, however, Germans were not concerned with building new boats, so he moved to Switzerland, where he started competitive sailing in 5.5 metre yachts, mainly on Swiss lakes and the Mediterranean Sea. In 1960 Baars-Lindner sailed the 5.5m yacht “Bronia” together with Herbert Scholl and Karl-August Stolze for the Unified German Olympic team.

After 10 years of intensive racing he returned to his home province of Schleswig-Holstein, and settled there with his wife and three daughters. By then Baars-Lindner had received his master’s certificate, and started working at the Vertens ship yard. He ran his own boat building and repair business under the name of Baars-Lindner + Renkhoff in the town of Schleswig, close to the Baltic coast, where he also joined the Schlei-Segel-Club and continued to sail his 60 m² yacht “Irene” for more than 50 years. The yacht was built the year he was born, 1925, had originally belonged to his adoptive father and was where Lindner died aboardship in 1960.
