Biography

A fine yachtsman, Selwin Calverley died at age 45 just four months after competing in the 1900 Paris Olympics after suffering a seizure, but he was actively sailing until shortly before his death. He was educated at Harrow and Trinity College, Cambridge, before being called to the Bar by the Inner Temple in 1882. He was a captain in the 4th Battalion Essex Regiment, and later a Justice of the Peace, and a deputy Lieutenant for the West Riding of Yorkshire. He was married to Sybil Disraeli, the niece of former British Prime Minster Benjamin Disraeli, Lord Beaconsfield.
