Biography

A member of Union Yacht Club Traunsee, two of Franz Eisl’s most significant international appearances came at the 1960 Rome and 1972 Montreal Olympics. In 1960, Eisl and Harald von Musil competed in the Star class, finishing 15th out of 26 nations. In 1972, Eisl joined Harald Fereberger and Karl Stangl in the Dragon class and placed 10th out of 23 entrants.

This trio had won the Austrian National Championship the previous year. In 1977, Eisl and Fereberger, joined by the non-Olympian Herbert Spitzbart, won the World Championships in this division, while in 1979 Eisl was ninth. Domestically, Eisl, Fereberger, and Eisl’s brother Friedl won a national championship in 1967, and Franz won two more titles in 1976 and 1980.

From 1986 through 1992, Eisl served as Commodore of Yacht Club Austria and helped organize a regatta. He was succeeded in this role by Fereberger, who served from 1992 through 1996, and, in July 2019, the duo died three days apart.
