Thoralf Glad’s father was administrator in Oslo’s Rikshospitalet. The son attended the Kristiania Katedralskole until 1894. A few years later, he was bookkeeper for a wholesale business. In 1910 he worked as office manager of the Norwegian branch of an American packing company. Another 10 years later, he was a wholesale in fashion and manufactured goods. He was married twice: first to Sigrid Glad, and in 1921 he married Ingerd Smith Hausken Glad (née Lange Bache).
In the 1912 Olympic sailing events, the Norwegian boat Taifun with Glad on the helm won both races of the 8 metres class and won gold in a superior manner.
