Steen Herschend was an engineer from København (Copenhagen). In his first marriage, his wife was Ebba Octavia (née Keller). They had one daughter, who later became an actress. After they got divorced, he married Karen (née Palslev). The couple had four sons.
In the duel of his “Nurdug II” and the French “Mac Miche” in the 6 metres class at the 1912 Olympic Games, the two yachts tied after two races. In the match-race for gold, “Nurdug II” trailed by almost three minutes and won silver. The “Nurdug II” was later transferred to Brazil, where she is still used for competitions under the name “Aileen”.
