Derek Hudson earned a PhD in Statistics from Imperial College, London in 1964 and worked in the United States for several years before accepting a job in Botswana in 1971. There he worked as a statistician for the government and eventually became a citizen of the country. This allowed him to represent Botswana in Finn class sailing at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, where he placed 27th.
Hudson later became the Deputy Governor of the Bank of Botswana, and in 1976, he produced Botswana’s first-ever Balance of Payments Table, which led, in 1991, to him becoming Botswana’s first-ever Banking Ombudsman. For his contributions to government statistics, Hudson was awarded the Presidential Order of Meritorious Service in 1989. He eventually returned to England for retirement, but remained active as a math coach and tutor.
