Although born in Praha, sailor Walter Mai represented West Germany at the 1972 München Olympics. He took part in the one-person Finn class at Kiel, and finished 12th. Mai never won a West German national title, but had three podium finishes in second place. By profession, he was a soldier within the Bundeswehr.
