George Nicholson had been sailing 12-foot dinghies from an early age with his brother Peter. His greatest moment came at the 1960 Roma Olympics when, along with John Ruggles and the three-time Olympian Robin Aisher, he finished sixth in the 5.5 metres class aboard Yeoman VII.
Nicholson worked for Camper & Nicholsons, the world´s oldest yachting company (established 1782). In the 1960s Nicholson and his father went to Cannes and subsequently established Camper & Nicholsons International. The company went on to play a significant part in the rise of the popularity of yachting on the French Riviera.
Camper & Nicholsons was sold to a rival French company in 2001 and the sale made Nicholson a multi-millionaire. He stayed on as chairman of the company after the sale as they established offices worldwide.
