Biography

Bob Lay was a sprinter who ran the 100 and 200 metres at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. He was eliminated in the semi-finals of the 220 yards and in the quarter-finals of the 100 yards of the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games. He finished fifth in the 4x110 yards relay at the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games.

Lay ran for Western Suburbs (Asics West). He won Australian titles at 100 yards in 1963-65. Lay won New South Wales titles in the 100 the same three years and doubled in the 220 yards in 1963-65. He added further New South Wales titles in the 100 metres in 1967-68 and the 200 metres in 1966-68.

After retiring from athletics, Lay played rugby union as a winger for three seasons for Randwick Rugby, winning one premiership and representing Sydney and New South Wales teams. He later worked extensively in sports administration in Victoria, for which he received an OAM (Medal of the Order of Australia).

Personal Bests: 100 – 10.42 (1964); 200 – 20.8 (1964).
