Track & field athlete Georg Werthner was Austrian champion in the 4×100 metres relay (1980-81), 4×400 metres relay (1980), long jump (1977), triple jump (1977, 1979-80, and 1982), javelin throw (1979-81, 1983-84, and 1988), and decathlon (1975, 1977, 1979-80, 1982, 1984, 1986, and 1988). As a decathlete he was a four-time Olympian from 1976 at Montréal to 1988 at Seoul. In 1980 at Moskva (Moscow), he came an unfortunate fourth, which was his best Olympic result.
At the World Student Games, Werthner won two bronze medals in 1981 and 1983. He later organized so-called one-hour and free-for-all decathlons in Germany and Austria to introduce young athletes to the decathlon. By profession, Werthner became a graduated financial lawyer. He also coached young athletes in pentathlon and decathlon.
Personal Best: Dec – 8224 (1982).
