Belgian track and field athlete Joseph Mariën represented Union Athlétique de Bruxelles where he specialised in long-distance running. In 1925 Mariën became the Belgian champion in the 10,000 metres, setting a national record that stood for a year in the process. The same year he also won the marathon at the French Championship going on to retain his title in 1926. At the 1926 Torino marathon in Italy he finished in second place, followed by a third-place finish in the 1927 Windsor to London marathon in England. Mariën ran in the marathon at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics, finishing in 56th place.
