Biography

Belgian track and field athlete Joseph Vander Wee was a member of the Royal Excelsior Sport Club in Laeken where he specialised in middle-distance races. During his career Vander Wee won three Belgian titles in the 800 metres (1920–21, 1925). At the 1920 Antwerpen Olympics he ran in the 800 metres where he finished fifth in his heat with only the top four athletes progressing to the semi-finals. Four years later he ran in the 1,500 metres at the 1924 Paris Olympics but did not advance from the heats. After his athletics career Vander Wee turned to politics and was elected as the mayor of Linkebeek on two occasions (1954–56 and 1971–75).
