Former world #1 Thomas Muster was the first Austrian tennis player to win a Grand Slam singles title with victory at the French Open in 1995. Muster played professionally from 1985 to 1999 before making a brief comeback in 2010. He played on Austria’s Davis Cup team from 1984 to 1997 and earned more than $12.2 million in prize money during his career.

Muster made his début in a top-level match in 1984 while he was still a junior player. In the same year he played for Austria in the Davis Cup, and played in the singles at the Los Angeles Olympics where tennis was a demonstration sport. Muster won 44 ATP singles titles during his career, with his first victory coming at the 1986 Dutch Open when he beat Jakob Hlasek in straight sets.

At Grand Slams Muster reached the singles semi-finals at the Australian Open in 1989 and 1997. His biggest win came in the final of the 1995 French Open when he defeated Michael Chang in straight sets. He played his final match at the 1999 French Open before moving to Australia. In June 2010, when Muster was 42, he announced a comeback to the sport, which lasted until October 2011 before he retired for good.
