Biography

Hélcio da Silva began his athletic career as a footballer with the Atlético and Coritiba clubs, but switched to track and field athletics after discovering that he had greater talents in that realm. The pinnacle of his career came in 1952, when he was South American champion in the pole vault and was selected to represent Brazil in that event at that year’s Helsinki Olympics. There, he placed 25th in the qualifying round and did not advance. He later became a state attorney and a physical education teacher, and was known in his older years as a golfer at the senior level.
