James Corkery was a Canadian long-distance runner who represented the Irish Athletic Club in Toronto. Corkery specialised in the marathon, finishing third in the 1910 Boston Marathon before winning the third edition of the Hamilton Marathon in 1911. The following year he won the Polytechnic Marathon ahead of South Africa’s Chris Gitsham to earn himself a place on the Olympic team. At the 1912 Stockholm Games, however, Corkery did not finish the course, with Gitsham eventually going on to win silver. Four years later he just missed out on a podium place at the 1916 Boston Marathon when he finished fourth.
