During the 1910s and 1920s Victor MacAuley was one of the best marathon runners in Nova Scotia, winning his first title at the Halifax Modified Marathon in 1913. When World War I broke out MacAuley went to serve his country and did not return to running until after the conflict ended. From 1921 to 1924 he won four consecutive editions of the Halifax Marathon, earning himself a place on the Olympic team in the process. At the 1924 Paris Games he finished 14th, just behind the best-placed Canadian athlete Jack Cuthbert, who came 13th. MacAuley also ran multiple editions of the Boston Marathon where he finished in the top ten on four occasions, including fourth in 1922 and 1930. He was one of the original inductees into the Nova Scotia Sport Hall of Fame.
