Biography

Born in Greenwich, London in 1893, Tommy Town first took up track running in England where he became a national junior champion. In 1910 Town emigrated to Canada where he continued with his love of running, winning multiple provincial championships across various distances. From 1919 to 1924 he won eight Canadian titles in races from 880 yards to five miles, including doing the double in the three and five mile events in 1920 and 1921. His performances earned him a place on the Canadian team for the 1920 Antwerpen Olympics where he ran in the 1,500 metres, 5,000 metres, and the cross-country race. Four years later Town qualified for the Paris Olympics but was unable to attend the Games due to injuries and a lack of financial support to fund the trip. He was inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame in 1985 and the Athletics Manitoba Hall of Fame in 2023.

Personal Bests: 1500 – unknown; 5000 – 15:56.4 (1920).
