Abbas Khairy was one of the few indigenous Egyptians competing in track prior to World War I, a time when most competitors at the national championships were Britons or other foreigners resident in the country. As early as 1913, an “A. Khairy” is recorded as the Egyptian 100 and 200 metres national championship although, due to spotty records of the era, it is unclear if this was Abbas. What is known, however, is that Khairy was part of his nation’s first fully Egyptian delegation to the Olympics in 1920. There he competed in three events, the 100, 200, and 400 metres, and was eliminated in the first round of all of them.
Personal Bests: 100 – unknown; 200 – unknown; 400 – unknown.
