Biography

José Molins was a Spanish middle- and long-distance runner whose international career spanned from 1955 to 1965. Molins began his athletics career with Joventut Atlética Sabadell before eventually joining FC Barcelona. He was a 17-time Catalan champion and a three-time national champion, twice in the 5,000 metres (1958, 1960), and once in the 10,000 metres (1961). He also broke the Spanish record in the 3,000 metres and the 5,000 metres.

Molins ran in the 5,000 metres at the 1960 Roma Olympics where he finished ninth in his heat and did not progress to the final. Just over a month after the Olympics he won two silver medals at the Ibero-American Games in Santiago, Chile, finishing second both times to Osvaldo Suárez in the 5,000 and 10,000 metres.

After his competitive career Molins coached several prominent Spanish runners including Carmen Valero and Miguel Quesada. In 2014 the Higher Sports Council awarded him with the Royal Order of Sports Merit.

Personal Best: 5000 – 14:16.8 (1960).
