Biography

Finland’s Yrjö Helander was a track and field athlete who specialised in the pole vault, winning multiple titles. Helander won four golds at the Finnish championships (1916, 1918, 1922, 1924), four silvers (1919–20, 1923, 1927), and a bronze (1915). In 1919 he improved the national record in the event when he cleared 3.62 metres. Helander represented Finland at the 1924 Paris Olympics where he tied for 15th place with five other athletes who all cleared 3.20 metres.
