Finnish track and field athlete Kalervo Toivonen represented Turun Urheiluliitto in Turku where he specialised in the javelin throw. Toivonen won four bronze medals at the national championships in the event (1936–38, 1943), along with a silver in the pentathlon in 1936. He competed in the javelin at the 1936 Berlin Olympics where he won bronze with a throw of 70.72 metres, just five centimetres behind compatriot Yrjö Nikkanen. Following World War II Toivonen worked as an athletics coach in Belgium and was part of their coaching team for the 1948 London Olympics.
