Robert Schürrer’s father was a physician. In the colours of the Sports Section Lorraine in Nancy Robert placed second in the 200 m and 400 m at the French Championships in 1911. In the following year he won the French trials in the 400 metres which earned him selection for the Stockholm Olympics. Like his teammate Georges Rolot, Schürrer competed in the 100 m, 200 m, and 400 m but only advanced to the second round in the 200 m. His best result was the silver medal in the 4x400 metres relay behind the United States, who won in world record time. In 3:20.7 the French team, Charles Lelong, Robert Schürrer, Pierre Failliot and Charles Poulenard, set the first official national record. In 1914 Schürrer claimed his last podium at the French Championships, placing third in the 400 m.
Schürrer married Marthe Marguerite Gegout in 1919; they had one daughter in 1926.
