Biography

Yorkshireman Peter Cullen competed in a number of different events as a junior and was English Schools champion at long jump in 1949 and high jump in 1950. It was the javelin that became his specialist event and he became Amateur Athletics Association champion in both 1956 and 1957. In the latter event he threw a personal best of 72.11 m to regain his British record after seeing that record broken three times that afternoon by rival Colin Smith. In addition to his Olympic appearance Cullen represented Great Britain at the 1955 World Student Games where he won a silver medal and placed sixth in English colours at the 1958 British Empire and Commonwealth Games. He also competed in decathlon and was Northern Counties champion at the discipline. A member of Rotherham Harriers Athletics Club he was a teacher who taught English and physical education
