Joseph Kinchin helped Sparkhill finish second in the 1907 Midland Counties Junior Cross-Country championship at Derby and in 1908 placed fifth in the steeplechase at the AAAs and ran well enough to be placed second in his heat at the 1908 Olympics behind Guy Holdaway, but did not advance. After the Olympics he concentrated on shorter distances, 880 yards and one mile, but only raced competitively for a couple more seasons. He later became a successful garage proprietor in Solihull where he was known as “Uncle Joe” to all the local children.
